During
the 2003-2004 school year, we were honored to have four young people
from Israel, two young men and two young women, join our Judaic staff.
Ranging in age from nineteen to twenty-five, they filled our school
with a spirit and love for Israel that had not been felt before.
The
two young men, one an officer, were both paratroopers in the Israeli
army. Gabi Berger and Yoni Sacks spent three years and five years in
the army, respectively. Liat Gilat and Miri Michaeli spent their second
year fulfilling their responsibilities of national service at our school.
They
were great assets to our community, organizing events, performing musical
shows, directing childrens’ plays, working on our Bnei Akiva youth
group, and standing by our students as mentors and as friends.
This year, we will be honored to have eight shlihim, four young men
and four young women. They will be traveling to the following campuses
once a month to conduct a class: UC Berkeley, UC Davis, and UC Santa
Cruz. Alumni of USF, SFSU, City College of San Francisco, and the College
of Marin will also be involved in this program. Due to a smaller group
of alumni in the latter list of colleges, there will be one common location
for these four campuses.
We
can’t wait to see what great things these young men and women
will accomplish. They stand on the shoulders of great leaders who come
before them, and they will be the inspiration for talented shlihim who
will come after.
